MP SCOTT DUVALL DEMANDS GOVERNMENT RELEASE DETAILS OF SECRET US STEEL CANADA DEAL

Hamilton Mountain MP Scott Duvall challenged the government to release details of a secret deal the government made with US Steel Canada in 2011.  “Step up to the plate, release the secret deal, and show the leadership people expect and deserve”, Duvall said in a statement in the House of Commons today.

“I’ve asked both the Prime Minister and other Ministers numerous times to release the details of the secret deal.” Duvall said.  “Their non-answers have insulted me, the pensioners and workers of US Steel Canada.”

Duvall’s challenge came in response to news that the United Steelworkers and the City of Hamilton were being forced to return to the Ontario Court of Appeal for a second time after the judge in the US Steel Canada restructuring proceedings again refused to release the secret deal made between US Steel Canada and the Federal  Government in 2011.

“Last Friday I met with representatives from the Local, District, and National Steelworkers who told us that several potential buyers have expressed interest and negotiations were underway,” Duvall said.  “This is an exciting development, but it was made very clear that the Steelworkers and the City of Hamilton were being put at a disadvantage in the negotiations by not having details of the commitments made in the 2011 secret deal.  Only US Steel Canada and their parent company have access to the information.  How does that make for a fair and equitable process?”

“These negotiations are critical to the fate of 20,000 pensioners and 1600 workers,“ Duvall continued.  “If a buyer could be found who would maintain the current jobs and who would top up the underfunded pension fund that would be a major victory for us all.  That should be the top priority.”

US Steel Canada entered bankruptcy protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) in 2014.  Efforts are underway to find a buyer for the company and those efforts are expected to wrap up by the end of the year.
